DOUG & MOLLY PHILLIPS

DOUG & MOLLY PHILLIPS

Doug as he prefers to be called and Molly Phillips were introduced to square dancing in 1980 while visiting Molly's sister, Ann, and brother-in-law, Monk Moore, also a caller. They attended the Spring Hoedown in Spokane, Washington and have been dancing ever since.

After seeing how much fun everyone was having, Molly told Doug whey they returned home to Malstrom AFB, Montana that she wanted to learn how to dance. In September of 1981 they took lessons in Great Falls, Montana. They joined the Dudes and Dolls square dance club after graduation and became very involved.

After dancing for several months Doug decided, he would like to learn to call. He purchased a used Newcomb turntable and speakers; and spent many hours in his basement working figures and practicing sing calls. He was invited to do guest tips at the local square dance clubs. Doug taught his first plus lessons when some dancers in Great Falls, MT asked him to teach them before he and Molly could even dance plus. This was the start of the "Doug's Gang" plus group. They teach and call both the Mainstream and the Plus programs. Doug currently has a DBD Plus group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Doug has attended many caller schools; the Frank Lane School in Estes Park, Colorado; the Vaughn Parrish Caller School in Lolo, Montana, as well as the Dick Ledger Timing; and Jerry Junck Callers Schools. In addition, he has attended numerous workshops held by the local caller's association. Doug uses the information he gained from these schools to train and teach others by doing lessons and workshops. Doug has called dances in nine states and Canada. He has been a member of the American Callers Association, the Montana Callers Association, the Nebraska Callers Association, and the Omaha Callers Association. He and Molly have held several leadership positions in both the NE Caller's Assn. and the Nebraska State Dancer's Association. Since 2010 Doug has recorded on the Double M Records label.

Shortly after transferring to Offutt AFB, Omaha Nebraska in 1989 the caller for the Papio Prancers Square Dance Club retired. Doug became their club caller and teacher until the club folded in 2000. During this time Doug taught many people to dance and to enjoy the square dance activity. Many good memories and friendships were forged.

Doug serves on the board of the Nebraska State Square And Round Dance Federation. In 1994 Doug created the Square Dance Nebraska website and spends many hours maintaining this website. Before the state newsletter, "The Roundup", was computerized, Doug was the membership committee chair for the state. Doug also built and gives guidance and assistance to Square Dance Omaha regarding maintaining their website.

Doug and Molly both have served on the Nebraska Eastern Square and Round Dance Federation which has hosted may Nebraska State Square and Round Dance conventions. The Omaha Square and Round Dance Council elected Doug and Molly as the Honored Guests for 2014, recognizing them for their unselfish contributions in promoting the square dance activity.

Doug is very involved in square dance activities at both the state and local level. He has done many community service events to promote square dance activities. Including calling on a float in several local community parades and one-night stands for youth groups. For ten years Doug has taught fathers and daughters the joy of square dancing at the annual Girl Scouts Father Daughter Banquet.

Doug and Molly have been dancing and Doug calling for 43 years. Doug promotes square dancing as good family entertainment, and an economical recreation for all ages. Molly and Doug say it is a fantastic way to make friendships that will last a lifetime. They believe their square dance friends are closer than family. In fact, they are family
