In the fall of 1970, Dave and his wife Emma attended their first square dance lesson. They were invited by a number of their neighbors and friends, whom were already members of the “Pairs & Squares” dance club in Shenandoah, IA.
Dave, at first was wary and reluctant and was quoted as saying “I will go this time but, I’m not going to take square dance lessons”.
Needless to say by the time he got through with the first lesson that evening he was already looking forward to the next week of lessons.
Dave and Emma graduated from their lessons just before Christmas in 1970, after graduation they danced as often as they could.
Realizing how much he enjoyed dancing; Dave decided to test his luck on calling. With help of the club caller (Dennis Boldra) he obtained some records and practiced vigorously for an upcoming event “Amateur Fun Night”. After that they traveled with the local caller and his wife too many of their dances, when Dave was asked, he would call a tip. In 1972, their club caller passed away, his gracious gift to Dave was his calling equipment and records. After that, when they would travel to other dances the callers would often ask Dave to call a tip. Dave taught his first class in the fall of 1974, with the help of the Angels and a lot of patience. He graduated 12 new students that year.
In 1987 Dave attended Frankie Lanes Caller’s college in Estes Park, Colorado. In 1989 he attended Jim Hayes Caller’s college in Concordia, Kansas. He has attended several weekend seminars and workshops throughout the years.
Dave was the Club Caller/Instructor for the” Pairs & Squares” club in Shenandoah, IA from1974 until the club folded in 2000. He calls mainstream and plus and is currently calling in a five State area consisting of Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri and Kansas. He has called at the Nebraska State convention for the past 13 years, the Iowa State convention for the past 10 years and called at the 57th National Convention in Wichita, Kansas in 2008.
He is a member of the Southwest Callers/Cuers Association., Omaha Caller/Cuer Association, the Nebraska State Callers Association, and American Caller Association. Dave & Emma are currently Vice Presidents of Southwest Federation.
Dave and Emma make their home in Essex, Ia. They have three grown sons Rodney, Jeffrey, and Dave Jr. they also have seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and two step great granddaughters.
Dave & Emma enjoy spending quality time with their family, Dave specially likes to spend time with his six year old great granddaughter “Brienna” when she comes to visit, which is quite often, she is about 2 steps behind him wherever he goes, she can be a little tomboy when ever she is with great-grandpa, but when she is with great-grandma she is a perfect little lady and likes to help her in the kitchen.
Dave’s hobbies include fixing up thing around the house and helping his son Dave Jr. on his farm, he also enjoys working on his 1947 ford tractor. Most of all he enjoys square dancing and calling, and the many friends they have made over the years through out their wonderful activity of Square Dancing.
